One famous legend tells of a cat at the Gotokuji Temple in Tokyo, who waved to a samurai during a thunderstorm, thus saving him from being struck by lightning. Out of gratitude, the samurai became a supporter of the temple, and the cat was revered as a bringer of good fortune. Another legend speaks of a geisha whose cat tried to warn her of danger. After her cat’s death, the geisha received a cat figure as comfort, giving rise to the tradition of the Waving Cat.
The most distinctive feature of the Waving Cat is its raised paw. The meaning depends on which paw the cat raises:
